Only Time Will Tell – Review

Only Time Will Tell (Cover)

‘Only Time Will Tell’ is yet another masterpiece from the stable of Jeffrey Archer and the first installment of the Clifton Chronicles. The novel which begins with these words ‘This story would never have  been written if I hadn’t become pregnant. .. .’ is sure to captivate the readers to read more and more until the last page is turned.

Harry Clifton has never met his father for he was dead long before he was born.  But why? This mystery never seems to leave his mind ever since. Every single question on his father is dealt with an unusual answer – ‘Your father died on the Front fighting for the country.’ But young Harry knew that it could not be true after he learned mathematics. He was born in 1920 but the Great War ended in 1919.  This mystery seemed to be unnerving.

Our hero, Harry belongs to a very poor family living in the back lanes of Bristol and his mother a young widow takes on a variety of jobs to ensure that her son gets the best of education.

Harry Clifton has an Uncle Stan who knows the truth to his father’s mysterious disappearance but is simply not willing to divulge the information. What is Harry only left with is one Old Jack Tar, a Boers War veteran and a Victoria Cross holder. But he too is somewhat of a less-divulge-of-information type and never tells Harry about his past. At the same time he captivates Harry’s imagination with his talk on a vast array of subjects which inspires our young man to stop bunking school and pay more attention in studies than being a docker in the Bristol Shipyard. Sounds a bit familiar?

The teen years of our Harry saw his best friend’s sister, Emma Barrington falling in love with him and so from there begins another beautiful story of our Harry and Emma. He eventually made into Oxford University but had to leave the course midway to join Britain’s forces during the World War I, which had been declared. He decided to follow the footsteps of his father and serve the nation in the Navy. He needs experience and so joined a cargo ship.  The German U Boats are out in the Atlantic Ocean ready to strike any British ships. Unfortunately for Harry his vessel was the target on a moonless night. Was he able to save himself? Who was Tom Bradshaw who looked like him but was an American? Why was Tom arrested by the police? If you want to know the answers then read the masterpiece from Jeffrey Archer to find out.

If Harry Potter failed to captivate you with his Tom Marvolo Riddle set back and enjoy this Harry Clifton with Tom Bradshaw to do the magic.

Verdict – A must read. Great novel. Truly a Masterpiece.

First Terminal Examination Balderdash (PART II)

Continued from First Terminal Examination Balderdash (PART I).

PART II:

Day – June 11th 2012

Our school reopened!! Woohoo!! Ultimate satisfaction to at last escape from home and reunite with my friends. Less than 1 month to go for the examination and I am 80% on my schedule. It will not take much time to complete this goddamn portion – I thought. So for the complete week or so I was simply interested in coming to school show my face to the teachers go back home then go to tuitions and fleet time carelessly round the clock. I had not yet touched Hindi the reason being I always do it the week before the examination. So everything was pretty much on track – not much to worry about. My mind said, “This time you would simply nail the examination.” Excellent! Continue reading First Terminal Examination Balderdash (PART II)

First Terminal Examination Balderdash (PART I)

Examinations?? Who was that goat who coined the term?  Where is he? Who the hell he was?  My wind went something like this. . . . .

The day was 18th July, 2012 and I just came out of class XI ‘B’ after answering my last paper – Geography.  It’s not that I am studying in XI. .  in reality I am just a fellow in class X. Wow! I have boards in March 2013 and I am not at all serious about it!! What an amazing thing! People (mostly my friends) call me a topper so the usual thing that you would come across is that I would have done WONDERFULLY in my examination. But let me tell you guys it’s exactly the OPPOSITE.  My first term exams went bullshit. Continue reading First Terminal Examination Balderdash (PART I)

Steve Jobs – The man with born talent for genius

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out? Continue reading Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.

I Love the Country Where I was Born

Well this just a short story which I have written based on the themes of patriotism and the age old charm of friendship and the bit of sacrifice which every one of us has to make in life. I hope you like this story.

“Do you know what you have to do, Amar?” asked Haider.
“Yes, I do.”
“You have been chosen for this. This is your destiny. Your peers have trusted you. I hope that you would not fail them.”
“I will not fail my task. I know what I have to do and I will carry it out to the ultimate perfection.” replied the 30 year old with an AK-47 hung from his shoulder, a Kalashnikov on his waist and 3 grenades in case the task failed. . .
“Amar today is the most important day of your life. Today you will reach your Higher Self. Forget about your past life it will only bring pain and look forward to the life which you will get. The ultimate reward of your actions. But tell me one thing. . . . are you afraid?”
“I am Amar and I am not a coward. Do you understand? Stop this nonsense and let me carry out what I Am supposed to do.”
Haider now had a devilish smile on his face. His face glowed in the morning sun. He felt happy that this boy had so much in him and yet he didn’t know what he was supposed to do in life until he came along. Azad Kashmir will cease to be a dream. It will be reality. Today I will rewrite the history with the help of this idiot, he thought.
Without saying much they proceeded to the jeep that was waiting for them at the gate of the dilapidated house. Amar was a little hesitant to step in. His heart had stopped him. Questions arose in his mind. Was this destiny really written for him? Is the path he was leading correct? Was he doing justice to his family? Was he doing justice to his Mother Land? But before any more questions could arise Haider had put his arm around Amar’s back and led him to the jeep.
*****
As they passed through the scenic country side of Jammu and Kashmir Amar saw the morning sun rising from the mountains. Removing the darkness spreading light all around, that what’s I am supposed to do. They passed through the fields on outskirts of Gulmarg. Amar felt a familiarity with them. Hey this is the place where I was born. My father used to work here. My mother cooked her meals in these fields where our farmhouse was.  I used to roam through these fields with Nilesh all day long. Nilesh…  Suddenly Amar was nostalgic. He felt a reminiscence of warm memories of his childhood with his father, mother, sister and Nilesh. Continue reading I Love the Country Where I was Born
