Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Maha Navami

Sorry, again I am again behind schedule in posting my update for Navami on 3rd October, 2014. Studies and tuition classes. . .  As I had already specified the peculiarity surrounding the timings of Durga Puja, this year Navami and Dashami are on the same day! One day less! Arghh. I wait all through the year for these little and precious five days and this year even that was deprived. Blasphemy for happiness. But anyways in Jamshedpur the pujo committees decided to defer the immersion till the next day (Saturday) since officially Dashami would end at around 6 in the morning. Now that was good news. Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Maha Ashtami

2nd October, 2014 – Maha Asthami – the day when the celebrations and revelry reaches its zenith. Kumari Pujo at Ramakrishna Mission, Pusphanjali and Sandhi Pujo all today. But this year due to peculiarity of the Pujo timings, Asthami according to the ponjika had already started on the evening of Saptami. Asthami would end by 8 am on 2nd October. I wonder why such absurd timings?

Nevertheless the morning began with a bang. I took part in the pushpanjali at Old Farm Area Puja, Kadma for the first time! It was an amazing experience. Earlier on Saraswati Puja I have offered pushpanjali but never to Maa Durga. I was up by 5 am and lazily found my way out of my room. Uff! It is a real work to get up in the mornings before dawn. Later, mother had prepared her thali and I happily took my Nikon D5100 DSLR to take a few snaps. I would have loved to take out my camera on every day and click pictures but I was afraid to take it in public lest it be snatched. Fears aside, today I had my parents with me. Chanting the shlokas with the other people and then offering the flowers to the Goddess was a moment to be relished. Continue reading Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Maha Ashtami

Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Maha Saptami

Sorry, for being late with my update for Saptami. I really did not get any time yesterday to do the writing job. I will be really short and crisp with this one and I will let the pictures do the talking.

So, it’s Maha Saptami – the seventh day of Her arrival. Apart from all the pandal hopping and eating stuff today is the bhog day! From today till Navami the delicious and heavenly khichudi will make its inroad to my home in its usual malsa. My father had not bought the bhog coupons beforehand and so it will be my trip to Kadma Old Farm Area Pujo to do the needful. Oh! The Khichudi with payesh, chatni and a sobji for lunch – the very thought of it makes one eager. Normally when my mother makes the khichudi at home I am usually seen frowning upon it. The same old yellow coloured semi liquid food.  But during the Pujo I am completely transformed. The khichudi of the bhog is much more yummy and tastes heavenly than my mother’s. Maybe its Maa Durga’s helping hand which makes it ever special. Continue reading Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Maha Saptami

Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Maha Shasthi

The sixth day – Shasthi. . .  yes! The day arrives with so much hope, excitement and revelry in store for the next few days.

First of all I should start by praising the Nature for giving such a bright and clear day for the start. Ah! What an ambience, no rains for the next few days with the possibility of some on Dashami but by then, the plethora of excitement would have receded and replaced by a quaint sadness. Even the weather cannot dampen my spirits now! The October Heat – come what may I am surely going to go pandal hopping. Continue reading Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Maha Shasthi

Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Mahalaya

I have been waiting to do this since long – to write a vivid account of the Pujo celebrations in Jamshedpur, my hometown. Last year, I almost would have written it but a last minute announcement at my coaching institute about an exam after the holidays, screwed things up for me. It was not that I did gloriously in the exam too; it was a disaster beyond imagination for me. Sort of a blasphemy, if you are going to ask me. Reason? As a true bangali during the pujo, I did not even care to turn over a single page. Oh! Come on – the Durga Puja’s are here only for a couple of days – not even a week and somebody expects a machcher jhol bangali to study?  Never. It’s a short and crisp answer residing in the negative zone. Continue reading Durga Pujo 2014 @ Jamshedpur – Mahalaya
